Elder Services

NIHWA Community Indigenous Eldercare Services can aid with health services, home-based services, public benefits, and advocacy services. These community members are committed to promoting independence and preserving the dignity of Indigenous Community elders and people with disabilities.

NIHWA’s one-on-one services will aid with and are not limited to:

  • Laundry
  • Grocery Shopping
  • Gardening
  • Basic housekeeping
  • Managing bills
  • Accompany or arranging times with appointments
  • Support with Financial and healthcare management(advocating)
  • Embark or arrange times to visiting family/community members
  • Attending Cultural Ceremonies/Events/Activities
  • Arranging transportation to and from Day Care programs
  • Companionship to visit/converse/go for nature walks/traditional crafts/play games of choice/cooking
  • Moving items in the home to have easier access too

NIHWA Personal Support Workers will provide care respectfully through being Culturally informed to provide the comfort care required with the activities of daily living in their community such as:

  • Dressing
  • Bathing
  • Meal preparation
  • Medicine reminders
  • Transfers
  • Repositioning

NIHWA will provide a Long-Term Culturally informed advocate for residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Elder Aids will work to prevent Professional/Community Elder abuse and ensure the needs of residents in assisted living facilities are properly attended to. These services will be provided through virtual meetings or in person meetings regulated by Health Canada guidelines.

  • Advocacy of needs to nursing homes and assisted living facilities
  • Regular visits not limited hours/days/weeks per Elder
  • Providing transportation to ceremonies/events/ outings
  • Provide Cultural Activities in collaboration with Activities Aid of home
  • Stay well informed of changes in health/care/needs of Elder
  • Consistent Communication between family/Community and Nursing home

Workshops/Gathering for Family/Community Members that provide care:

  • How to do lifts/transferers respectfully and safely 
  • How to reposition Elders that are immobile
  • Washing/bathing techniques to maintain healthy hygiene
  • Food preparation from solid to puree including bite size to liquids
  • Elder Safe your home
  • Advocating for Elders in ways of medical/financial care
  • Financial planning
  • Managing your time between healthy self and caring for Community
  • Sharing Circles to share stories/express needs for support
